Organic Lovage, Levisticum officinale, Sustainable Canadian Farm Grown,
With its celery flavour, lovage gives a wonderful flavour to soups and stews.
Lovage leaves are said to have been chewed on by the ancient Greeks to help with digestion and gas. The leaves were even placed on weary feet and used to help with pain and swelling.
Lovage originates in what is todays Iran and Afghanistan but has been cultivated in Europe and North America for quite a long time.
The leaves are very aromatic with a scent that reminds of celery. It should be dosed very carefully because it can easily overrule any other flavor. Lovage gives hearty soups and stews a wonderful note but also goes well (in small quantities) with veal, poultry, and fish.
Add lovage and tarragon to a bottle of vinegar to flavor it.
In herbal medicine lovage is used to help with stomach issues and digestion. In the olden days it was taken as an aphrodisiac.
